Advancing Sustainability to Celebrate Zero Emissions Day

In this blog post, we will explore the significance of Zero Emissions Day, its relevance to our portfolio of commercial buildings, and offer valuable tips on how to celebrate this pivotal day in the most eco-friendly manner.

In case you missed it, September 21 is Zero Emissions Day, which for the team at Mantis Innovation, is certainly worth taking pause and embracing. At Mantis, we are focused on providing our clients with proven solutions for reducing energy costs and improving operational efficiencies, but we are also hyper-focused on helping our clients reduce their emissions and overall carbon footprint. We meet our clients wherever they are on their path to improved sustainability and today we invite you to join us in celebrating Zero Emissions Day and in exploring a few key ways to take strides towards meeting your organization’s goals.

But first, what is Zero Emissions Day?

Zero Emissions Day – A Brief History

Zero Emissions Day, also known as ZeDay, is an annual event that encourages people to reduce their carbon footprint and avoid using fossil fuels for 24 hours. It is held on September 21st, the day of the autumnal equinox in the northern hemisphere and the spring equinox in the southern hemisphere. The goal of ZeDay is to raise awareness about the impact of human activities on the environment and to inspire positive actions for a more sustainable future.

ZeDay was founded in 2008 by Ken Wallace, a Canadian environmental activist who wanted to create a global movement to combat climate change. He chose September 21st as the date because it is a day of balance, when day and night are equal in length. He also wanted to coincide with the International Day of Peace, which is celebrated on the same day.

ZeDay is not a protest or a boycott, but a celebration of our planet and our potential to make it better. It is a day to enjoy the natural beauty of the world, to connect with others who share the same vision, and to take action to reduce our environmental impact. ZeDay is open to everyone, regardless of age, location, or background. All you need is a willingness to participate and a desire to make a difference.

So, how can you make a difference?

How To Celebrate Zero Emissions Day…and Make an Impact

There are many ways to celebrate ZeDay and show your support for the cause. Here are some ideas to get you started:
  1. Opt for Sustainable Transportation:

Choose to walk, bike, or use public transportation instead of driving a car.

Consider carpooling or ridesharing with colleagues or neighbors to reduce the number of vehicles on the road.

  2. Promote Remote Work:

Encourage employees to work from home, reducing the need for commuting.

Utilize virtual meetings and digital collaboration tools to minimize in-person gatherings.

  3. Energy-Efficient Building Practices

Implement energy-efficient measures in your commercial building, such as smart thermostats, programmable HVAC systems, HVAC and mechanical upgrades, and building automation systems (BAS).

Consider an LED lighting retrofit, which is typically one of the most cost-effective ways to reduce energy usage.

Ensure regular maintenance and inspections to identify and rectify any energy waste or inefficiencies.

  4. Turn Off Lights and Electronics:

Encourage everyone in your building to turn off lights and electronics when not in use.

Consider installing motion sensors to automatically turn off lights in unoccupied areas.

  5. Support Renewable Energy:

Consider switching to renewable energy sources, such as solar panels or wind turbines, to power your building.

Purchase renewable energy credits to reduce your facilities’ carbon footprint while investing in the ever-growing clean power infrastructure.

  6. Offset Carbon Emissions:

Consider investing in carbon offset programs or projects that align with your organization's values and goals.

Support initiatives that capture or reduce greenhouse gas emissions, such as reforestation or methane capture projects.

  7. Monitor and Measure Progress:

Regularly assess your building's energy and resource consumption.

Set goals and track progress toward reducing your carbon footprint over time.

  8. Explore Green Roofing Solutions:

Green roofs, also known as living roofs, are an environmentally friendly option that not only reduces carbon emissions but also offers a range of benefits. Incorporating green roofing technology allows you to create a sustainable and visually appealing space for your building.

  9. Get Full Company Buy-In:

When staff are actively engaged in and committed to sustainability and efficiency goals, it fosters a sense of purpose and alignment with the organization's mission. This engagement can lead to increased employee satisfaction and motivation, ultimately boosting productivity as employees work together to find more sustainable and efficient solutions.

Employees buy-in toward sustainability and efficiency goals often results in reduced resource consumption, waste, and energy use, which can in turn lead to significant cost savings for the company.

  10. Partner with a Trusted Source:

Utilize experts to help your organization to implement net-zero strategies with a near-zero incremental expense, by integrating sustainability into your facility-related, priority initiatives.

By incorporating these tips into your celebration of Zero Emissions Day, you can contribute to a more sustainable future while showcasing your commitment to environmental responsibility. ZeDay is not only about what we do on September 21st, but what we do every day of the year.
